                                                                  Instructions
Only trained professionals may use the RRED Harness

1)        RAPID INTERVENTION TEAM DOWNED FIREFIGHTER EXTRICATION PROCEDURE:
a)        Follow all department protocols for RIT.
b)        Loosen the downed firefighter from any debris. The first rescuer arriving at the downed firefighter opens the DRD
access panel and exposes the floating handles.
c)        Each rescuer takes a handle and begins the extrication. As the weight is loaded onto RRED it equalizes pulling the
torso and lifting the shoulders.
d)        If a third team member is available he may act as a “leader” by having team member one and two place one (outside)
hand each on top of his cylinder. The third team member (the leader) then uses a thermal imager to find the most efficient
direction to safety while clearing a path to egress.
e)        The other two team members just follow the leader; there is no need for the members to see anything, the leader has
cleared the way.
2)        CLOSE QUARTERS AND DOORS
a)        When the leader finds tight spaces he notifies team member one. Team member one stops the drag, pulls his
“floating handle” and the upper harness self equalizes to team member one’s pull. Now each rescue team member forms a
straight line allowing for safe passage through tight spaces.
b)        To return to the original position just reverse the process. Team member two pulls his handle and the harness will
return to position by self equalizing.
3)        BELOW GRADE EXTRICATION
a)        Windows, basements, stairs and etc.
b)        Downed firefighter preparation should be done according to fire department protocols. Once the downed firefighter is
at the below grade exit point rescuers from above grade can use rescue rope or webbing tied in the rescue knot of
preference with a carabiner attached and lower it to the below grade rescuers. The floating handles may be attached with
the carabiner and remove the down firefighter.
c)        BEFORE RAISING THE FIREFIGHTER SECURE ARMS AND HANDS TO THE TORSO EITHER USING SCBA WAIST
STRAP OR RESCUE WEBBING TIED IN AN APPROVED KNOT FOR RESCUE. WHILE UNLIKELY, IF THE ARMS COME
ABOVE THE HEAD DEATH OR INJURY MAY OCCUR!

Installation
1) The RRED DRD can be installed by any user.
a)        Using your favorite Fire Gear Alteration company, have them install a 1 ½” tall by 3” wide opening in the center of the
fire coat.
b)        The Access Panel is recommended to be placed close to the SCBA line (top of the cylinder and clear of shoulder
straps). That is 1” below the collar.
c)        Stitch a support piece fire coat material ½” wide inside the opening and then fold it (on the center) through the
opening and stitch it outside. This acts as   a stress relief when the DRD is activated.
d)        Now surround the other three sides with 3/4” hook and loop (Velcro®). Stitch the top of the panel to the coat.
e)        With the inner and outer liners separated, don the inner liner normally. Put the RRED DRD on like a coat. Bring the
floating handles on the floating strap.
f)        Have an assistant hold the handles in place while the outer liner is donned.
g)        Reach through the access panel and bring 1 ½ - 2” of the floating handles through. (Crease down first)
h)        Insert the 3/4” piece of matching Velcro to hold the handles in place. The handles in turn hold the intersection of the
harness in place and prevent riding down the coat.
2)        Care and maintenance
a)        The DRD should be removed as a separate component when washing the fire coat.
b)        The DRD should follow all Kevlar care procedures. Washing should be separate from the coat when disassembled.
c)        Only an approved fire gear wash should be used by placing in a container and gently rotate the DRD to loosen any
contaminants being while careful not to break any harness fibers.
d)        Air dry the DRD only.
e)        Do not allow harness to be exposed for long periods of time to direct sun light.
f)        Reinstall in accordance to item 4, Installation instructions.
3)        Re-loading the DRD after Use
a)        Normally the DRD may be reloaded with out removal.
b)        Don the fire coat normally. Raise both arms straight up.
c)        With an assistant, have them reach between the inner and outer liners and place the figure eight intersection at the
DRD Panel. (See section 4 installation).
d)        With the intersection and handles secured, reach between the liners and pull the figure eight loops along side of the
wearer by pulling all of the slack down ward. (See figure 2).

Rapid Rescue Extrication Device LLC
What the Competitors Say:
1. LIMITED TO 300 Pounds INCLUDING FF GEAR!
2. MAY BECOME ENTANGLED
3. CANNOT BE USED AS A HARNESS INCLUDING LIFTING, LOWERING, ANCHORING OR SECURING A PERSON TO AN OBJECT

What RRED Says:
1. RRED is a 9000# tensile strength webbing, there IS NO weight limitation on the personnel.
2. Over time Hook and Loop fasteners will need to be "combed or cleaned" to enhance their ability to fasten. To date RRED has NEVER had a problem with the strap getting caught
or tangled. Even if the flap opens our strap handles lay flat instead of standing up limiting the possibility of becoming entangled.
3. BECAUSE NOT EVERY EMERGENCY HAPPENS ON THE GROUND FLOOR...and by following the manufactures instructions, RRED places no limitations on lifting, lowering, or
dragging. *Downed FF arms must be secured to the sides to prevent raising above the head.
